Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)

Photodynamic therapy is an in-office treatment for actinic keratoses (precancerous sun spots), especially when there are many spots across an area such as the face or scalp. A light-sensitizing solution called aminolevulinic acid (ALA) is applied to the skin and left to absorb, then activated with red light. PDT treats both the visible spots and early sun damage that can't yet be seen.

For added cosmetic improvement, PDT can be combined with an IPL Photofacial to also reduce brown spots, redness and broken blood vessels, leaving skin clearer and more even.

After treatment, the skin may look and feel sunburned for a few days, followed by light peeling over about a week. Strict sun avoidance for 48 hours after treatment is essential, as the treated skin is very sensitive to light.
