What to Expect at Your Full Body Skin Check
Full body skin exams are an important part of staying healthy. Skin cancer can cause serious illness, and even death, when it isn't caught early, but most skin cancers are very treatable when found early. We recommend that everyone have a baseline full body skin exam to understand their risk of skin cancer and to review good skin care habits.
Before your exam
Your visit begins with a review of your medical history. Please bring a list of your medications and allergies, along with any skin care or dermatologic medications you have been using.
Next, you'll change into one of our fashionable gowns. Undress to your comfort level. If you're unsure, we usually suggest leaving your underwear on and removing your bra.
Tell us your concerns
One of the first things we'll ask is, "Do you have any concerns?" Please point out any moles or spots that are new, changing, bleeding or painful. Patients are often very in tune with their own skin and are good at noticing when something looks different.
A thorough skin check takes up most of the appointment, so there may not be time to fully address other skin problems such as acne, rashes or eczema. For those, we're happy to schedule a separate visit so your provider can focus on that concern.
Your head-to-toe exam
We'll examine your skin from head to toe and note any spots that need monitoring or treatment. Wendi Schulze, MSN, DCNP-C, is trained in dermoscopy and uses it during her exams. A dermatoscope is a handheld magnifying light that shows details of a mole or spot that the naked eye can't see. It helps us tell whether a spot is normal or needs a closer look.
As we go, we'll point out spots and explain what they are. Please ask about any spot you're curious about.
If we find something concerning
If we find a concerning spot, we will usually biopsy it the same day. The area is numbed with a small injection, and the spot is then shaved or scraped off. The sample is sent to a dermatopathologist, a doctor who specializes in diagnosing skin under the microscope. We'll call you with your results within 7–10 days. If the spot is abnormal, it may need further treatment or removal.
Protecting your skin going forward
Before you leave, we'll talk about your personal risk of skin cancer and healthy skin habits, including sun avoidance and sun protection. Your provider will also let you know when to schedule your next skin exam, based on your history and today's findings.
